This Just In!
(from the Flash SUXXORZ department)
I found my Flash kept crashing when I visit Yahoo Mail or SoundCloud. I had just updated it earlier today to the latest version (11.5.502.110). I’m using Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and browsing with Safari, but it will likely also be a problem with Lion or Mountain Lion.
I rolled back to Flash 11.2 and everything’s running like a top again. In case you’re wondering how you too can roll back Flash, here’s how to do it (this should work on any Mac OS from 10.6 onward).
How to Revert to an Older, Less Sucky Version of Flash.
- Go to this page: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html#flash_player_archives
- Download the file labelled:
- (Released 5/04/2012) Flash Player 11.2.202.235 (159 MB) - Download the Flash uninstaller found on this page: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html
- Quit your browser and run the uninstaller.
- Click “Done” when it tells you it was successful, and delete the following files (if they’re still there):
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player.plugin/
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/flashplayer.xpt
~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/
~/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash Player/ - Go into the 159MB archive you downloaded (it’s a zip that will probably expand automatically)
- Open the zip and then open the folder “11_2r202_235_64bit”
- Double-click on “flashplayer11_2r202_235_mac.dmg” and you’ll get the familiar Flash installer, but for the seven-month-old version. Install.
Finally relaunch your browser and go to http://soundcloud.com/nebula where you’ll be able to hear some of my ridiculous beats without Flash crashing.
A Final Thought (maybe a warning?)
I don’t know what the newer version of Flash may have fixed. By reverting, as I have, you will be using an older Flash which may have other functional or security issues – but so far it’s running smoothly for me!
